How to overlay one PDF on another

Open the base document, point to the PDF to apply on top, choose which way round — above or below — and download. The second document becomes a layer applied to every page of the first: a letterhead under your text, a frame, a stamp, a repeated notice, a background plan. It is the action that makes a headed document out of a file produced by software that knows nothing about headers — an accounting export, an invoice, a certificate. The layer’s transparency is preserved, so a PNG stamp on a transparent ground does not lay a white square over the text. If the layer has only one page, it is repeated on every one; if it has as many as the document, the pages match one to one. Nothing is uploaded.

Two documents that are not the same size

The layer is centered on the page receiving it, without being distorted. If the sizes differ too much — an A5 on an A4 — put the layer through the resizing tool to the document’s size first: the two will then line up to the millimeter. To make your own letterhead, a one-page document holding the logo, the address and the rules is enough.
