How to draw on a PDF

Open the document, choose Draw, and draw on the page with a mouse, a stylus or a finger. The stroke becomes an annotation belonging to the document, not an image glued on top: it stays crisp at every scale, it moves, it deletes, and it barely adds any weight to the file. Thickness and color are set before or after you draw, and a bad stroke undoes in one action. On tablet and phone, a finger draws and two fingers scroll the page, so you do not draw when you meant to navigate. The document stays on the device, which is the least one can ask when putting one’s own handwriting on it. A stroke laid by mistake comes off without touching the rest of the page. The thickness you choose holds for the strokes that follow, until you change it.

Drawing or signing

For a signature, the dedicated tool is handier: it isolates the stroke on a light ground, cuts it out, keeps it for your other documents and places it at the scale you want, where you want. Freehand drawing is rather for correcting a plan, crossing out an area, joining two elements, writing a handwritten remark in the margin.

Frequently asked questions

Can I draw with my finger on a phone?

Yes. One finger draws, two fingers pan and zoom the page: the two gestures never get confused.

How do I erase a bad stroke?

Ctrl+Z, or the Undo button: each stroke is its own step in history. A stroke already down can also be selected and deleted.

Can I sign with this tool?

You can, but the Signature tool is made for it: it keeps your signature and puts it back wherever you want, at the right scale.

Is the stroke smoothed or raw?

It follows your gesture and is smoothed into an even curve: on screen as in print, the intermediate points do not show.

Can I change the stroke thickness?

Yes, four thicknesses in the style bar, before or after drawing. The stroke is blue by default — a proofreader’s ink, which will not be mistaken for the document’s own text.
